Texas how-to guides

How to keep your Texas car insurance current

Texas requires liability insurance on every vehicle you drive. The goal is simple: no gap between your old policy ending and the new one starting.

Have these ready

  • Your current policy's end date (on your insurance card).
  • Your vehicle details and the drivers on the policy.
  1. 1

    Check the renewal offer

Most insurers send a renewal notice before the end date. Check the price and coverage still suit you.

  2. 2

Renew or switch with no gap

If you switch insurers, start the new policy on or before the day the old one ends. Cancel the old one only after the new one is active. Texas Department of Insurance

  3. 3

    Keep proof with you

Texas accepts a digital insurance card on your phone. Keep the new card handy.

  4. 4

Upload the new card to RoadLegal

RoadLegal reads the new end date for you, you confirm it, and your reminders move to the new date.

If you're already late

Driving without insurance can mean a fine of up to $350 the first time, and more plus a possible license suspension if it happens again. You also can't renew your registration without it.
