How to renew your Texas driver's license
Texas driver's licenses are generally valid for several years, and you can renew up to 2 years before yours expires.
Have these ready
- Your current license.
- A way to pay the renewal fee.
- For an office visit: book an appointment ahead of time.

Check if you can renew online
Many drivers can renew online every other renewal. DPS tells you if you're eligible when you start. Texas DPS driver license

Otherwise book a DPS office visit
Schedule an appointment online, then bring your current license and payment.

Keep your temporary license
After renewing you get a temporary license to use until the new card arrives by mail.

Update the date in RoadLegal
Enter the new expiry date in Settings so your reminders move to it.
If you're already late
Driving with an expired license can bring a fine. If it has been expired for over 2 years, you may have to retest.
